SUMMER PROGRAM
2004 - An Overview
The OY! Summer Program
is an annual four-day program of progressive political education and
training for South Asian youth between the ages of 17 and 23 scheduled
for the second week of August.
The
Program is structured as a series of workshops, panels and training
sessions that will examine and deconstruct the structures that promote
systemic oppression and social injustice and explore how systemic
oppression is practiced on the basis of gender, class, race, ethnicity,
nationality, sexuality and religion.
OY!
Summer is ultimately focused on exploring the most effective way of
resisting oppressive systems by analysing and understanding the various
domestic and international systems that create and foster oppressive
inequalities.
The workshops in the
first two days will enable the particpants to reflect on the ways in
which power, privilege and oppression have affected their own lives,
and to place their experiences in broader contexts. The next two days
build an understanding of the structures in which systems of oppression
and inequality (such as the State, Religion, Capitalism, International
Trade and Globalization) operate. Through the course of the program,
the participants will be introduced to various movements of
resistance, including the proud tradition of South Asian resistance on
the west coast and elsewhere.
