WORKSHOPS
Workshop I:
Power, Privilege and Oppression
Part 1: Tuesday
Aug 9, 2pm - 4.30pm
Part 2: Wednesday
Aug 10, 9.30am - 12.00pm, 1.30 to 2.00pm
This workshop
will provide creative ways for us to reflect on power, privilege
and oppression
and how they affect our lives, using our personal experiences as a
starting point.
We will understand how oppression is practised along the lines of race,
class, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc. We will
examine stereotypes and norms that exist in society, and how they work
in insidious ways. We will begin to seek out and understand the
perspectives of the marginalized. All this understanding will help us
begin our search for ways to work toward social justice.
Workshop II: Systems
of Oppression
Part 1: Thursday
Aug 11, 9.30am - 12.30pm
Part 2: Friday
Aug 12, 9.30am - 12.30pm
In this
workshop we examine the role various institutions play in perpetuating
different forms
of oppression. We continue with the discourse from the previous workshop, but shift
the focus to systems of
oppression such as capitalism, racism, patriarchy, heterosexism, and
imperialism. We explore
the role that law, economics, and cultural hegemony play in
perpetuating systemic inequalities. We will use the prison and
military industrial complex as examples to map out these systemic
oppressions and illustrate their interconnections.
Workshop III:
Resistance and Solidarity
Part 1: Saturday
Aug 13, 9.30am - 12.30pm
Part 2: Sunday
Aug 14, 9.30am - 11.00am
In this workshop,
we explore the need for resistance,
and learn about strategies of popular struggles around the world. We will discuss the importance of
organizing, linking struggles, and building solidarity, and identify
ways for us to participate in social change.

PANELS
Some of the evenings at OY Summer
2005 will be spent in panel discussions,
which will feature
community resources and organizations in allied movements. Being grounded in the stories
and experiences of real-world activists and movements, these sessions will help us
make the connection from the abstract to the practical, and understand better the
interconnected-ness of issues and the necessity for interlinking struggles.
This year, we expect to feature two panels.
Note: All panels are free and open to the public. You do
not need to be a registered participant of the OY 2005 program to
